Cleaning An Apartment After Everyone Has Been Sick
A short list in priority order, written for the week when the apartment needs resetting and nobody has the energy to do all of it.
Do it in priority order, not all at once
The week after an illness is not when anyone has a full day of cleaning in them. So the list below is ordered, and stopping halfway through it still leaves you better off than doing a bit of everything.
The apartment does not need to be sterilised. It needs the things that were handled and slept in to be dealt with, and the air to move.
First: bedding and laundry
- Sheets, pillowcases, and the duvet cover from every bed that was used.
- Towels, hand towels, and bath mats.
- Whatever was worn while sick, including the blanket that lived on the sofa.
- Wash on the warmest setting the fabric label allows, and dry fully.
- Wipe the washing machine door seal afterwards, since it holds moisture.
If there is only energy for one item on this page, make it the bedding. It is the surface with the most contact time by a wide margin.
Second: touchpoints
Clean these with soap and water first, then disinfect if you want to, following the label for how long the surface should stay wet.
- Door handles on both sides, light switches, and the fridge handle.
- Phones, tablets, remotes, laptop, and game controllers.
- Taps in the kitchen and the bathroom, plus the toilet handle and seat.
- The bedside table, the water glass, and whatever thermometer or medicine packaging was in reach.
- Kitchen counters, the kettle handle, and the mugs and cutlery that were used.
Third: the bathroom
The bathroom gets the heaviest use during an illness and it is the room where a reset makes the most difference to how the apartment feels. Toilet in full, including the base and the floor around it, then sink, taps, and the handle side of the door.
Replace the toothbrush of anyone who was ill, empty the bathroom bin, and wash the bath mat with the rest of the laundry. Run the fan while you work and for a while afterwards.
Fourth: air and soft surfaces
- Open windows across the apartment for as long as the weather allows, ideally two windows for a cross-draught.
- Vacuum the sofa where someone spent the week, cushions lifted.
- Wash or air out cushion covers and throws.
- Change the vacuum bag or empty and rinse the canister afterwards.
- Leave floors and general dusting for last, or for the following weekend.
What this does not treat
This is a cleaning reset, not medical advice. If symptoms are ongoing, worsening, or specific to the apartment rather than to a person, that is a question for a doctor rather than for a cleaning list.
It is also worth separating the two situations that look similar. An illness that passes and leaves an apartment feeling stale is a cleaning job. A cough or congestion that improves whenever you leave the apartment and returns when you come back points at damp, mold, or ventilation, and no amount of surface cleaning resolves that. Put that one to the building in writing with dates.
When to hand the reset over
There is a version of this week where the household is still recovering, the laundry has piled up, and the apartment has been running on nobody's attention for ten days. Handing over the reset rather than adding it to that week is a reasonable call.
A one-time reset clean covers the whole apartment in a single visit, and deep apartment cleaning is the version that adds appliance interiors and the buildup that accumulated while nobody was up to it.
Good answers before a cleaner shows up.
What should I clean after being sick in my apartment?+
Bedding and towels first, then touchpoints like handles, switches, phones, and taps, then the bathroom. Floors and dusting matter least here and can wait.
How should I wash bedding after illness?+
On the warmest setting the fabric label allows, dried fully. Wipe the washing machine door seal afterwards, since it holds moisture between loads.
Do I need to disinfect the whole apartment after flu?+
No. Clean surfaces normally and disinfect the touchpoints that hands actually contacted. Disinfecting floors and walls adds work without adding much.
Should I replace toothbrushes after being sick?+
It is a common precaution and it costs very little. The bathroom reset is a natural moment to do it along with emptying the bin and washing the bath mat.
