Apartment Dishwasher Smells Or Leaves Film: What To Clean First

A working order for the two most common rental dishwasher complaints, plus the point where it stops being something you can clean.

The filter, first and almost always

Most dishwashers have a removable filter in the floor of the machine, usually a cylinder that twists out. In a rental it is often the single part nobody has touched since the unit was installed.

Twist it out, rinse it under hot water, and use a soft brush on the mesh. If what comes out explains the smell, you have found the problem. Put it back the same way, seated and locked, because a filter left loose lets debris into the pump.

The parts around it that also hold gunk

  • The spray arms, which have small holes that clog. Pop them off if they twist free and clear the holes with a toothpick.
  • The rubber gasket around the door, wiped along the fold where it seals.
  • The bottom lip of the door, below the gasket, which sits outside the wash cycle and collects a film nobody sees.
  • The detergent dispenser flap, which gets sticky and stops opening fully.
  • The drain area under the filter, cleared of glass chips, seeds, and labels from jars.

White film is a different problem

If glasses come out cloudy and the film wipes off with a little vinegar on a cloth, it is mineral deposit from hard water, not leftover food. Adding more detergent makes it worse, because detergent residue looks similar and stacks on top of it.

The usual fix is a cup of white vinegar in a bowl on the top rack, run hot with nothing else in the machine. Rinse aid handles it going forward. If the film does not budge with vinegar and feels chalky and dry instead, that is detergent residue, and the answer is less detergent rather than more.

Habits that keep it from coming back

  • Scrape plates, but do not pre-rinse them spotless, since modern detergent needs something to work against.
  • Run the machine before it starts smelling rather than waiting until it is full.
  • Leave the door cracked after a cycle so the inside dries.
  • Clean the filter monthly, which takes about two minutes once you have done it once.
  • Run the hot tap at the sink for a few seconds before starting a cycle.

Where cleaning ends and maintenance starts

Standing water in the bottom after a cycle, water backing up into the sink when the machine drains, a burning smell, or a leak at the door are not cleaning problems. Neither is a machine that never gets hot.

Those go to the building in writing, with the date and a photo. In most leases the appliance came with the unit, which makes repair the landlord's side of the line. Cleaning a filter to fix a drainage fault just delays the request and puts you closer to being blamed for the damage.

When it is worth folding into a kitchen clean

A dishwasher that has gone years without attention is usually not alone. The same apartment tends to have a range hood filter nobody has washed and a fridge nobody has moved, and all three are the parts a regular clean skips.

If that describes the kitchen, it is the case for deep apartment cleaning, which covers appliance interiors and filters rather than surfaces. The cleaning checklist lists what a deep visit includes in the kitchen.

Before you book

Good answers before a cleaner shows up.

Why does my apartment dishwasher smell bad?+

Nine times out of ten it is the filter at the bottom holding trapped food. The door gasket and the bottom lip of the door are the next places to check.

How do I get white film off glasses from the dishwasher?+

Run an empty hot cycle with a cup of white vinegar on the top rack. If the film wipes off with vinegar it was mineral deposit, and rinse aid keeps it from coming back.

How often should I clean a dishwasher filter?+

Monthly is a good default, more often if you run it daily or do not scrape plates. It takes about two minutes.

Is a broken dishwasher the landlord's responsibility?+

Usually yes, when the appliance came with the unit. Standing water, leaks, or a machine that will not drain should be reported in writing rather than treated as a cleaning problem.
