Why the oven carries so much weight

An inspector opens the oven door in the first minute. It is one of the few places where a year of cooking is visible at a glance, and it is hard to fake with a quick wipe. A clean apartment with a black oven interior reads as an unfinished job.

It is also the task most people leave for the last morning, which is exactly when it goes wrong. Every method that actually works on baked-on grease needs time to sit.

Find out which oven you have first

Three types show up in apartments, and the wrong method on the wrong one causes damage you will be charged for.

• Standard: a plain enamel interior. Scrubbing and degreasers are fine.
• Continuous or catalytic clean: a rough, speckled interior coating that burns off spills as you cook. Abrasives and oven cleaner destroy it.
• Self-clean: a smooth interior plus a locking cycle that heats the oven high enough to turn residue into ash.

If you cannot tell, look for a model number on the door frame and search it, or ask the building. Guessing wrong on a continuous-clean oven turns a cleaning task into a replacement charge.

The self-clean cycle in a rental

The cycle works, and it also stresses old appliances. In buildings with aging ranges it is not unusual for a thermal fuse or control board to fail during or after a self-clean, which leaves you with a dead oven days before you hand over the keys.

If you run it, run it early in your move-out week. Open windows, keep pets out of the apartment, pull the racks first unless the manual says they can stay, and wipe the ash out with a damp cloth once everything has cooled.

Manual cleaning that works on baked-on grease

This is slower on the clock and faster in practice, because most of the time is unattended.

• Spread a thick paste of baking soda and water over the interior, avoiding the heating elements and the fan opening.
• Leave it overnight, or at least four hours.
• Wipe it out with a damp cloth, then go back over the stubborn spots with a plastic scraper rather than steel wool.
• Finish with a vinegar and water wipe to pick up the last of the residue.

The parts that get skipped

Most people clean the floor of the oven and stop. The parts that show up in inspection notes are elsewhere.

• Between the door glass panes, where drips collect and stay visible.
• The door seal, the frame around it, and the hinge area.
• Racks, which soak best in a bathtub lined with an old towel so the enamel does not scratch the tub.
• The drawer under the oven, which collects crumbs and grease nobody looks at for years.
• The range hood filter above, since a clean oven under a greasy hood still reads as dirty.

When to hand it over

There is a point where the oven has been baked on for years by people before you, and no overnight paste is going to reach the bottom of it. If the interior is uniformly black, if the door glass will not come clear, or if you are moving the same week, the math changes.
