What professionally cleaned usually means

In most buildings, the phrase describes turnover cleaning: the work done between one tenant leaving and the next one arriving, usually on a tight schedule and often alongside paint and repairs.

Turnover cleaning is real work, and it has a specific goal. The unit needs to show well, smell neutral, and pass the walkthrough. That goal does not include the inside of the cabinet you are about to stack plates in.

The five spots that answer the question

Do this before the truck arrives. It takes five minutes and it settles the decision.

• Open a cabinet and a drawer and run a hand along the back corner and the underside of the shelf above.
• Pull out the refrigerator drawers and look under them, and check the door seals.
• Open the oven and look at the door glass and the drawer underneath.
• Look behind the toilet, at the hinges, and at the floor where it meets the base.
• Check the floor edges along the baseboards and inside the closets.

If four of the five are clean, the unit was cleaned properly and you are looking at a light wipe-down. If three or more are dirty, the clean was aimed at the middle of each room and stopped there.

Two different jobs, not two levels of the same job

This is worth separating, because it is not about a company doing bad work. Turnover cleaning answers the question can this unit be handed over. Move-in cleaning answers a different one: can someone put their food, dishes, towels, and children in here today.

The second question is why cabinet interiors, appliance interiors, and closet shelves matter so much on move-in and matter so little at turnover. Nobody stores anything in an empty unit.

If the clean was clearly skipped

Take photos before you touch anything, and send them the same day rather than after you have moved in. A dirty unit documented on day one is a maintenance conversation. The same unit reported three weeks later is your word about a place you have been living in.

• Photograph the specific spots, with a wide shot of the room for context.
• Note it on the move-in inspection form if you were given one, in the same words you used in the photos.
• Ask in writing whether they will send someone back, and by when.

The middle path most people actually want

You rarely need a full deep clean of a unit that was just turned over. What you usually need is a targeted pass: cabinet and drawer interiors, the fridge and oven, the bathroom, closet shelves, and the floor edges. That is a couple of hours in an empty apartment and it lands before your things are in the way.

When the full clean is worth it

Go further when the unit sat empty for months, when the previous tenant had pets, when there is a smell you cannot place, when the building is older and the surfaces are original, or when someone in the household has allergies.
