A Bathroom With No Window: Managing Humidity, Not Just Cleaning It

The problem is water, not dirt

A shower puts a surprising amount of water into the air of a small room. In a bathroom with a window, some of it leaves the moment the window opens. In an interior bathroom the only exit is the extractor, and whatever the extractor does not remove condenses on the coldest surfaces and stays there.

That is why an interior bathroom that gets cleaned properly still grows mildew in the same three places. Cleaning removes what grew. It does nothing about the conditions that grew it, and those conditions repeat twice a day.

The five minutes that change it

• Run the fan for fifteen to twenty minutes after the shower, not just during it. This is the single biggest change available.
• Squeegee the tiles and the glass while you are still in there, which removes most of the water before it can evaporate at all.
• Leave the door open afterwards, and the shower door or curtain open too.
• Hang towels somewhere they actually dry rather than folded on a rail in the same damp room.
• Wipe the ledges, the tap, and the shower base with the towel you are about to put in the wash.

None of this is cleaning and all of it decides how much cleaning the room needs. Twenty seconds with a squeegee removes more water than the fan does in ten minutes.

Working out whether the fan is doing anything

Even a working fan can be undersized or ducted badly. The practical signal is how long the mirror stays fogged after a shower with the fan running. Ten minutes is normal, half an hour means the air is not going anywhere, and that is worth reporting with those words rather than as a complaint about mildew.

What helps beyond the fan

• A small dehumidifier run for an hour after showers, which is the most effective addition in a genuinely bad bathroom.
• A moisture absorber tub, replaced when full, for the cupboard under the sink.
• Keeping the shower curtain or door fully extended so it dries instead of holding folds of water.
• Not drying laundry in the bathroom, which is common in apartments and doubles the problem.
• Removing anything paper, wooden, or fabric that lives permanently in the room and stays damp.

Where the line to maintenance sits

Yours: running the fan, squeegeeing, ventilating, cleaning surface mildew, keeping the room from being a drying rack.

The building's: a fan that does not move air, a fan vented into a ceiling void rather than outside, mildew coming through paint or drywall rather than sitting on it, a bathroom that stays damp with no shower running, and any staining on the ceiling. Report those in writing with dates, because a recurring mildew problem in an interior bathroom is usually a ventilation fault rather than a cleaning failure, and the record matters at move-out when someone reads the staining as neglect.

The cleaning that is still worth doing
