Why it smears instead of lifting

Household dust is mostly fibre and skin, and it lifts. Traffic deposit is fine soot and brake and tyre particles carried in a trace of oil, which makes it stick and smear. That is why a dry cloth on a city windowsill leaves a grey streak rather than a clean surface.

Where it lands first

The method that works

Warm water with a little dish soap, and a damp cloth rather than a dry one. Wipe in one direction and rinse the cloth often, because a loaded cloth just moves the film to the next section.

Two passes beat pressure: the first lifts the bulk, the second takes the residue. On glass, wash first with soapy water and then do a normal glass clean, since going straight to glass cleaner on an oily film produces streaks that look worse than the film did.

Ventilation timing, which matters more than frequency

Air the apartment when the road is quiet rather than when you happen to think of it. Early morning before the commute, late evening, and after rain are all noticeably cleaner than the middle of a weekday.

If the apartment has windows on more than one side, favour the quiet side for airing and keep the street side closed while ventilating. That single habit reduces the deposit more than any change to how you clean, because most of it arrives through open windows rather than through gaps.

What actually reduces the load

• Washing screens two or three times a year rather than once, since a loaded screen stops filtering and starts shedding.
• Washable curtains on the street side, laundered on a schedule rather than when they look grey.
• An air purifier with a real particle filter, positioned in the room facing the road rather than in the bedroom at the back.
• Checking whether windows seal properly, since a gap turns a closed window into a slow inlet.
• Shoes off at the door, because a share of street grit arrives on soles rather than through the air.

The part that is not yours

Windows that no longer seal, failed weatherstripping, a gap where the frame meets the wall, and any window that cannot be closed fully are maintenance items. So is a ventilation system drawing air from the street side without filtration.

Worth reporting with the observation attached: deposit accumulating on a sill of a closed window is evidence the seal is not working, which is a more actionable report than saying the apartment is dusty.
