Why this one cupboard defeats everything else

Containers are the only kitchen items that come in two separate pieces which must be reunited, arrive from multiple sources, and accumulate without anyone deciding to buy them. Takeaway tubs, jars, sets bought years apart, none of it stacking together.

That is why tidying it never lasts. Sorting a cupboard of mismatched pieces produces a neat cupboard of mismatched pieces, and it is chaotic again within a month.

The twenty minutes that fixes it

• Take everything out onto the counter, both bases and lids.
• Match every lid to a base. Anything without a partner goes, both directions, including the base you are sure the lid will turn up for.
• Discard anything cracked, warped from the dishwasher, or with a lid that no longer seals.
• Discard anything so stained or smelling that you avoid using it, since you already stopped using it.
• Keep what actually stacks together, which usually means one or two families of container rather than nine singles.
• Wash what remains and dry it fully before it goes back.

The number that survives is normally much smaller than expected, and the smaller number is what makes the cupboard usable rather than the arrangement.

Stains and smells in plastic

Tomato and curry stains are pigment absorbed into the plastic. A thick baking soda paste left on the stain for a few hours removes a lot of it, and a few hours of direct sunlight on a washed container fades the rest surprisingly well.

Smells respond to the same treatment: wash, then leave with a spoon of baking soda and the lid off for a day. Neither method is perfect, and a container that still smells after both is telling you something. Glass does not have this problem at all, which is worth knowing when you next replace anything.

Storing it so it stays fixed

• Bases stacked by size, nested where they nest.
• Lids upright in a single box or a rack beside them, not lying inside the bases, which is what makes the stack collapse.
• One shelf only, and treat it as the limit rather than a starting point.
• The tallest items at the back, since a cupboard you cannot see into refills with mystery.
• Nothing stored inside a container except a lid it belongs to.

The rule that keeps it that way

Every takeaway tub that comes into the apartment either replaces something or goes into recycling that week. Kept in case, they are the single largest source of what fills this cupboard, and they arrive faster than anything else in a kitchen.

It is also worth a check whenever you empty the dishwasher rather than a scheduled review. A warped lid or a cracked base spotted then is thrown out in the moment, which is the only version of this maintenance that actually happens.

While the cupboard is empty

This is the only time that shelf is clear, so wash the shelf itself, the underside of the one above, and the inside of the door. In most kitchens that surface has never been washed, and it collects a fine sticky film from cooking that spreads to whatever sits on it.
