Radiators And Baseboard Heaters: Clean Them Before The Season

Why it has a deadline

Heaters collect dust all summer while nobody looks at them, then the first cold morning arrives and the whole apartment smells like something is burning. That is the dust cooking, and it is why this job belongs in early autumn rather than on a general list.

Doing it before the season also means doing it on cold metal, which is the only safe way. Once the heating is running, the job either waits or involves working around a hot surface.

Cast iron radiators, common in older buildings

• Vacuum the top, the sides, and the floor underneath before anything else.
• Use a long thin radiator brush down between the columns, working top to bottom, one gap at a time.
• Hold the vacuum hose at the bottom while you brush from the top, so what comes loose gets caught rather than distributed across the room.
• For anything the brush cannot reach, a hairdryer on cold pointed down the gap moves dust out onto a damp cloth laid on the floor.
• Wipe the outer surfaces with a damp cloth last, once the dust is gone.
• Do the wall behind it and the floor under it, which is where the dust actually landed.

The cloth on the floor is the detail that saves you a second job. Without it the dust lands on the carpet and you have moved the problem rather than removed it.

Baseboard convectors, common in newer units

The long metal covers along the wall usually lift or unclip off, which exposes the fins underneath. Those fins are where the dust actually is, and cleaning only the cover achieves almost nothing.

Vacuum along the fins with a brush attachment, gently, and never with anything that could bend them. Bent fins reduce the heat output permanently and they are not something to straighten with a screwdriver. If a cover does not come off easily, leave it and vacuum through the slots instead.

What not to do

• Do not clean anything while the heating is on or the surface is warm.
• Do not touch the valves on a steam or hot water radiator, including the small vent on the side. Those affect the system and belong to maintenance.
• Do not paint a radiator, which reduces output and is not yours to do in a rental.
• Do not use water inside a baseboard convector, which sits over an electrical or hydronic element.
• Do not block airflow with furniture pushed against it or a cover placed over it, which is both a heating problem and a fire consideration.

Where it stops being a cleaning job

Banging or knocking when the heat comes on, a radiator that stays cold while others heat, a hissing vent, any leak or damp at the valve, or rust staining on the floor beneath are all maintenance items.

So is a burning smell that continues for more than the first day or two of the season after the unit has been cleaned. Report those in writing with the date, before the cold sets in properly, since heating requests take longer once every unit in the building has the same problem.

The dust connection

Heaters are a genuine dust source once running, because they push air across whatever settled on them. An apartment that feels dusty from October onward, with a clean routine that has not changed, is often heating a summer of accumulated dust.
