Cloudy Shower Door: How To Get Hard Water Film Off Apartment Glass

First, find out what you are dealing with

Wet a corner of the glass and look at it while it is wet. If the haze disappears under water and returns as it dries, the film is still sitting on the surface and it will come off.

If the haze is still visible while the glass is wet, that is etching. The minerals have pitted the surface, and no product reverses it. That is worth knowing before you spend an afternoon scrubbing, and worth mentioning to the building if the door came that way when you moved in.

The order that works

Two layers, two steps, in this order. Doing it in reverse is why people conclude that vinegar does not work.

• Degrease first: dish soap on a wet sponge, worked over the whole panel, then rinsed. This lifts the body wash and soap film sitting on top.
• Then the minerals: white vinegar, warm, sprayed on or applied with a soaked paper towel pressed against the glass.
• Let it sit ten to fifteen minutes. Dwell time is doing the work, not pressure.
• Work it with a non-scratch pad, top down, in sections rather than the whole door at once.
• Rinse fully, then squeegee dry. Vinegar left to dry leaves its own haze.

For a door nobody has touched in years

A rental shower door can carry years of buildup, and one pass will not clear it. Two or three rounds of soak and work, spread across a couple of days, does more than one long session with more force.

Skip the razor blades and the abrasive powders. On tempered glass they leave scratches that look worse than the film did, and in an apartment that turns a cleaning problem into a damage question at move-out.

The tracks and the seal, which are usually worse

• The bottom track, cleared with an old toothbrush and a paper towel wrapped around a butter knife for the corners.
• The rubber sweep along the bottom of the door, which holds a black line of mildew.
• The hinges and the frame edges, where deposit collects and stays wet.
• The handle and the inside edge of the frame, which get skipped every single time.

The tracks are what make a clean door still look neglected. They take about ten minutes and change the look of the whole shower more than the glass does.

Keeping it off, which is easier than removing it

A squeegee after each shower is the whole prevention strategy. It takes about twenty seconds and it stops the cycle before the minerals have anything to bond to.

Running the bathroom fan during and after a shower does the same job for the rest of the room. If yours does nothing when you hold a tissue to it, that is a maintenance request rather than a cleaning habit you are failing at, and it is worth putting in writing because a dead fan drives mildew everywhere else in the bathroom too.

When it is worth handing over

A shower door that has gone years without attention is usually in a bathroom where the grout, the fan cover, and the shower head are in the same state. Those all need soaking rather than wiping, which is exactly what a normal weekly clean never has time for.
