The Kettle, The Toaster, And The Air Fryer Nobody Cleans

Five appliances that live on the counter, get used daily, and are almost never cleaned inside.

The kettle

Scale builds inside as a white or grey crust and it is mineral rather than dirt. Fill the kettle about a third with equal parts water and white vinegar, bring it to a boil, then leave it an hour before pouring it out.

Rinse two or three times and boil once with clean water before using it again, unless you want vinegar tea. If the kettle has a mesh filter in the spout it lifts out and needs its own scrub, which is where most of the visible flakes come from.

The toaster

  • Unplug it, always, before anything.
  • Slide out the crumb tray and empty it. In most kitchens this has never been done.
  • Turn the toaster upside down over the bin and shake, which removes far more than the tray does.
  • Wipe the outside, including the lever and the dial.
  • Never put anything metal inside, and never wash any part of the body.
  • Monthly is a realistic interval, and it is a genuine fire consideration rather than a tidiness one.

The air fryer

The basket and the crisper plate come out and wash like dishes, and the sooner after use the better. Once fat has been through a few more heat cycles it carbonises onto the coating and stops coming off with anything gentle.

The part people miss is the heating element in the lid or the top of the cavity. Once it is cool, wipe it carefully with a damp cloth, because that is where the smoke and the smell come from in a machine that seems clean. Do not use abrasives on any coated surface, since a scratched non-stick basket is the end of that basket.

The coffee machine, which needs it most

Whatever the machine, water passes through it every day and mineral scale builds up inside where nothing is visible. Most manuals give a descaling interval, and most people have never opened the manual.

Beyond descaling: the drip tray and the used-pod or grounds container are wet, dark, and enclosed, which makes them the most reliably unpleasant part of any kitchen counter. Wash them weekly. On a machine with a milk system, that circuit is a daily rinse rather than a weekly one, and no amount of exterior wiping substitutes.

The microwave and the rest of the counter

  • The microwave has its own method, which is steam rather than product.
  • The blender base seal, which unscrews and holds what leaked past it.
  • The stand mixer head, where the shaft meets the body.
  • The electric grill plates, done while still warm rather than the next morning.
  • The counter underneath every one of these, which is where the sticky ring lives.

The rule that covers all of them: anything with a removable part has a removable part for a reason, and the reason is that it gets dirty.

Two things to check in a rental

If the appliances came with the apartment, check what the lease says about them before descaling or dismantling anything. Most of this is routine care and nobody will object, and a machine that breaks the week after you took it apart is a conversation you would rather avoid.

And if a small appliance was left by a previous resident rather than listed on an inventory, ask before assuming it is yours to keep, use, or throw out.

Counter appliances sit outside regular cleaning almost everywhere, which is why they are usually the oldest dirt in a kitchen. They belong to deep apartment cleaning along with the built-in appliance interiors, and the checklist shows what a deep visit includes in a kitchen.

Before you book

Good answers before a cleaner shows up.

How do I descale a kettle?+

Fill it a third with equal parts water and white vinegar, boil, leave an hour, then rinse two or three times and boil once with clean water. Pull the spout filter out and scrub it separately.

How often should a toaster be cleaned?+

Monthly. Unplug it, empty the crumb tray, then turn it upside down over the bin and shake, which removes far more than the tray does.

Why does my air fryer smoke?+

Usually the heating element in the lid or the top of the cavity, which collects fat that the basket wash never reaches. Wipe it with a damp cloth once cool.

Do I need to descale a coffee machine?+

Yes, on whatever interval the manual gives, since water passes through daily and scale builds where nothing is visible. Wash the drip tray and grounds container weekly.
