Smell Coming From A Drain: The Three Causes And How To Tell Them Apart

Start with the cheapest test

Pour a large cup of water slowly down the drain that smells, wait ten minutes, and see if it improves. That single test separates a dry trap from everything else, and it takes no products and no effort.

Every drain has a U-shaped trap under it holding a small amount of water, and that water is the seal between your apartment and the sewer line. In a guest bathroom, a floor drain, a laundry drain, or a shower nobody uses, that water evaporates over a few weeks and the seal disappears. Refilling it fixes the smell the same day.

If water did not fix it, it is biofilm

Biofilm is the soft grey layer that builds on the inside of the pipe from soap, hair, toothpaste, skin, and grease. It smells sour or sweetish rather than like sewer, and it is the most common cause in a drain that gets daily use.

• Pull the stopper or the strainer out completely. In a bathroom sink the stopper usually lifts out or unclips underneath, and what comes with it explains most of the smell.
• Clean the stopper and the strainer with a brush and dish soap.
• Push a thin drain brush or a flexible plastic strip down as far as it reaches and pull the buildup out rather than pushing it further in.
• Flush with a kettle of hot but not boiling water, since boiling water can damage plastic traps and seals.
• Follow with baking soda then vinegar if you want, and give it fifteen minutes before rinsing.

Skip the caustic drain cleaners. On a slow drain they sometimes help, on a smell they do very little, and in a rental they can damage older pipes and turn a maintenance repair into a charge against you.

The overflow hole, which almost nobody cleans

Bathroom sinks have a small overflow opening near the top of the basin, and it connects into the same drain. It collects its own biofilm and it is a genuinely common source of a smell that persists after the drain itself has been cleaned.

Fit a small bottle brush into it, or pour a little cleaner in and follow with hot water. If a smell survives everything else on this page, this is usually the missing piece.

The signs it is the building

• The smell is clearly sewer rather than sour, and it returns within a day of cleaning.
• It gets stronger when a neighbor runs water, or when the washing machine drains.
• Several drains in the apartment smell at once.
• You hear gurgling from one fixture when another one drains.
• The smell is worse in warm weather or after heavy rain.

Any of those points at venting or at the stack rather than at your pipe. Report it in writing with dates, and mention the gurgling specifically if you hear it, because that is the detail a plumber acts on.

Keeping it away

Run water for a few seconds in any drain you rarely use, once a month. That is the entire maintenance routine for the dry-trap problem, and it takes less time than reading about it.

For daily-use drains, pull the stopper and clean it monthly rather than waiting for a smell, and run hot water down the kitchen sink after washing anything greasy. Both of those keep biofilm from establishing rather than removing it later.

When it is part of something larger

A drain smell rarely arrives alone in an apartment that has not had a thorough clean in a while. The same visit usually turns up a disposal splash guard, a dishwasher filter, and a washing machine seal in the same state, and together those explain a kitchen or bathroom that smells for no visible reason.
