The short answer

It is optional. Nobody is going to think less of you for not tipping, and the price you were quoted is the price of the work.

That said, it is common enough that most cleaners are neither surprised nor uncomfortable when it happens, and on a hard job it lands well.

When it makes most sense

• A first deep clean, which is always the hardest visit and often runs longer than estimated.
• A move-out clean on a unit that was in worse condition than anyone expected.
• Anything over the holidays, where a larger one-time amount is a common gesture.
• A visit where you asked for something extra and it was absorbed without a fuss.
• Bad weather, an awkward building, or a fifth-floor walk-up with no lift.

The pattern is effort beyond what the quote assumed. That is the version of tipping that means something rather than the habitual kind.

Amounts people actually use

For a one-off visit, ten to twenty percent of the price is the range most people land in, or a flat amount per cleaner if a crew came. For recurring service, per-visit tipping gets awkward quickly, and a single larger amount once or twice a year is both simpler and usually more appreciated.

None of that is a rule. If the honest budget is nothing, that is a complete answer and there is no need to feel about it either way.

Company or individual, which changes the mechanics

With a company, ask how tips reach the cleaner. Some pass them through in full, some split them across a crew, and some handle it through the app or invoice. If two people came, cash in two envelopes removes all ambiguity.

With an independent cleaner, the distinction between a tip and the rate blurs. Many people find it simpler to agree a fair rate and skip tipping entirely, which is a reasonable choice and worth saying out loud rather than leaving unspoken.

The three things worth more than a tip

• A specific review by name, which is worth real money to a cleaner or a small company in a way twenty dollars is not.
• Telling them what you actually want. Most complaints trace to expectations nobody stated, and a two-line note before the visit prevents them.
• Being predictable: access sorted, pets managed, the apartment not full of things to work around.

If you only do one of these, make it the review. It is the single most valuable thing a happy client hands over.

When not to tip

When the work was not good. A tip given to avoid an awkward moment removes the only signal that something was wrong, and the cleaner leaves believing the visit went fine.

Say what was missed instead, plainly and without heat. Most companies would rather send someone back than lose a client, and that conversation is more useful to everyone than a tip and a quiet switch to someone else.
