In A Bathroom You Cannot Smell When Something Is Finished

Why the usual signal does not work here

In a kitchen, a sponge announces itself. It smells when wet, the smell is out of place, and most people replace it on that cue without thinking about it as a decision.

A bathroom smells faintly damp as a matter of course. Warm air, wet surfaces, and a room that never fully dries mean the background is already the smell you would be listening for, so nothing in it ever stands out. That is the whole reason a shower liner can be four years old in a household where the kitchen sponge is replaced every three weeks.

So put dates on them

• Shower liner: one to two years, and sooner once black spotting returns within a fortnight of washing.
• Loofah or shower puff: three to four weeks. They hold dead skin, they never dry inside, and no amount of rinsing changes either.
• Natural sponge: less than that, and honestly not worth having in an apartment bathroom.
• Toothbrush: three months, or after any illness that went through the household.
• Bath mat: replace when it stops drying between uses, which is usually well before it looks worn.
• Toilet brush: six months to a year, and the holder washed every time the bathroom gets a real clean.

None of these are expensive. The cost of getting them wrong is not money, it is a bathroom that smells and nobody can locate why.

The toothbrush holder is the one nobody checks

Brushes go in wet, the water runs down, and it collects in the bottom of the holder where nobody looks. In most apartments that container has never been emptied and washed, and what is in the bottom of it is exactly what you would expect after a year.

It goes in the dishwasher if it is that kind of material, or gets washed with hot soapy water and a bottle brush if not. Once a month, at the same time as everything else in this article. The cup people rinse with has the same problem and the same fix.

What is genuinely washable

Towels, bath mats, and the liner are all washable and stay in service for a long time if they get to dry properly between uses. That is the actual variable: a towel washed weekly but hung folded on a hook is worse off than one washed fortnightly and spread on a rail.

The same applies to a razor left in the shower, which is not a hygiene question so much as a rust one, and to anything stored in the shower rather than taken out of it.

The test that replaces the smell test

Since the room will not tell you, use touch and time instead. Pick the item up. If the bottom is slimy, if it is still damp from yesterday, or if you cannot remember buying it, it is finished.

Once a month is enough for a pass like that, and it takes about five minutes because there are only six or seven things in the room it applies to.

If everything keeps failing early

Items that go bad quickly across the board are describing the room. A bathroom where nothing dries between uses is a ventilation problem, and it shows up in the liner and the mat first because they are the cheapest things in there.

That is worth acting on rather than absorbing as a cost, because the same conditions are working on the grout, the seals, and the paint, none of which are replaced for a few dollars.
