The deadline is the whole point

Most move-in cleaning can be finished gradually over the first month. This one cannot. The weeks after a birth are not a period when anyone washes closet interiors, and the tasks that get postponed tend to stay postponed for a year.

So the ordering principle is not what is dirtiest, it is what has a deadline. Anything that needs open windows, moved furniture, or a full day belongs now.

The nursery, done first and properly

• Walls, ceiling, and the tops of door frames, since this room usually gets the least airflow and the most closed door.
• Closet and drawer interiors washed and fully dried before anything goes in.
• Window, sill, track, and blinds, which is the corner where dust settles hardest.
• Floor including under where the cot will stand, plus baseboards.
• Vent cover removed and washed.
• Radiator or heater, inside the fins if reachable, before the heating season.

Then leave the room aired for a day before furniture goes in. That single day is worth more than any product used in it.

Timing anything with a smell

New furniture, mattresses, paint, and flooring all off-gas, and so do strong cleaning products. None of that is a reason for alarm, and all of it is a reason to schedule.

Unbox a new mattress and let it air in a ventilated room for a few days before it is used. If anything is being painted, do it as early as possible and keep the windows open afterwards. Use plain products in the nursery, warm water with a little dish soap for most of it, and save anything strong for the bathroom with the door closed and the fan running.

The rest of the apartment, in priority order

• Kitchen, since bottles, sterilising, and food preparation will run through it constantly.
• Bathroom, in full, including the fan cover and the seals.
• The laundry area, especially the washing machine drum and door seal, because the volume of laundry is about to change completely.
• Floors throughout, since a baby will be on them sooner than it seems.
• The room where you will spend nights, which is often not the bedroom.
• Everything else, which can genuinely wait.

What is not worth the energy

Sterilising every surface in the apartment is a common instinct and it is not a good use of a finite amount of energy. Normal cleaning plus attention to touchpoints is the same advice that applies to any move-in.

The same goes for redoing rooms you will not use for months. A guest room, a study, a balcony, and the back of the storage closet are not on the clock. Note them and move on.

Where to spend money instead of time

This is one of the clearest cases for handing the whole move-in pass over, because the constraint is energy and a fixed date rather than money. An empty apartment done in one visit before furniture arrives removes the largest block of work from the weeks where it is most expensive to do.
