Oven Racks, Burner Grates, And Everything That Fits In No Sink

A whole category of kitchen items is too big for the sink and too dirty for the counter, which is why they go years without being cleaned.

The category, not the item

Oven racks, burner grates, the range hood filter, a grill pan, sometimes a fridge shelf. What they have in common is that they are too large for an apartment sink, too dirty to put on a counter, and there is no outdoor space to deal with them in.

That is why they are consistently the oldest dirt in a kitchen. Not because anyone decided to skip them, but because there is genuinely nowhere obvious to do the job.

The bathtub method

  • Line the tub with an old towel first. This is not optional: racks scratch enamel and acrylic, and a scratched tub is damage in a rental.
  • Lay the items flat, fill with hot water until they are covered.
  • Add dish soap and either a scoop of washing soda or a few dishwasher tablets, and let it sit for a few hours or overnight.
  • In the morning most of it wipes off with a non-scratch pad.
  • Rinse thoroughly, dry completely, and refit. Rinse the tub afterwards too, since the residue is greasy.

Soaking is doing the work here. Anything you scrub at hour zero, you would have wiped off at hour eight.

The bag method, when there is no tub

Put the rack in a heavy-duty rubbish bag, add a cup of ammonia or a strong degreaser, seal it, and leave it in the bath, a shower tray, or on a balcony for several hours. The fumes do most of the work rather than the liquid, so the item does not need to be submerged.

If you use ammonia: never combine it with anything containing bleach, open the bag outdoors or with the window open and your face away from it, and keep it away from pets and children while it sits. If that sounds like more caution than you want in a small apartment, a degreaser in the same bag works more slowly and without the risk.

The dishwasher, which sometimes works

Burner grates and hood filters often fit and often come out fine, depending on the machine and the item. Check whether they are dishwasher safe first: some enamelled grates dull, and some aluminium hood filters discolour permanently.

Oven racks rarely fit and, if they do, usually take the whole machine for one item. Worth trying once with a hood filter, which is the item most likely to fit and to transform.

What damages what

  • Racks on a bare tub or shower tray: scratches, which is damage rather than dirt.
  • Steel wool on grates: strips the enamel and creates the rough surface that holds grease next time.
  • Oven cleaner on aluminium: discolours and can pit it, which matters for hood filters specifically.
  • Self-clean cycles with the racks inside: check the manual, since many manufacturers say to remove them because the finish discolours.
  • Putting anything back damp: rust on racks and grates starts there.

How often, and when it matters

Hood filter every one to three months if you cook regularly, and it is the item with the largest effect on how a kitchen smells. Burner grates whenever they stop looking clean. Oven racks twice a year, or once, honestly.

The exception is move-out, where all of them are on the inspection list and the oven is the first thing opened. That is the one time the whole category has to be done rather than triaged.

The oven itself is covered in the move-out oven guide, and the whole set sits inside deep apartment cleaning and move-out apartment cleaning, where the soaking time is somebody else's afternoon.

Before you book

Good answers before a cleaner shows up.

How do I clean oven racks without a big sink?+

Line the bathtub with an old towel, lay the racks flat, cover with hot water, add dish soap and washing soda or dishwasher tablets, and leave overnight. The towel is not optional, since racks scratch tubs.

What is the bag method for oven racks?+

Seal the rack in a heavy-duty bag with a cup of ammonia or a strong degreaser and leave it several hours. The fumes do the work, so it does not need submerging. Never combine ammonia with bleach.

Can burner grates go in the dishwasher?+

Often, depending on the machine and the item, though some enamelled grates dull. Check first. Hood filters are the item most likely to fit and to come out transformed.

How often should a range hood filter be cleaned?+

Every one to three months if you cook regularly. It has the largest single effect on how a kitchen smells and is almost always years overdue in a rental.
