Pantry Moths: They Came Home In A Bag, And How To Clear Them

It is not about how clean your kitchen is

Pantry moths get into food during processing or storage, long before it reaches you, and they arrive in the apartment inside a sealed package. A spotless kitchen gets them exactly as easily as a neglected one.

That also means they can appear in a brand new apartment within weeks of moving in, and it means the neighbours are not the source. The bag of flour is.

Finding the package

• Look for fine webbing in the corners of packets, clumped grain, or a mat of silk on the surface of flour or rice.
• Check everything, not just the obvious: flour, rice, oats, pasta, cereal, nuts, dried fruit, spices, birdseed, and pet food.
• Open sealed packages rather than trusting them, since larvae chew through thin plastic and cardboard easily.
• Look at pet food specifically, which is the single most commonly missed source.
• Check the seams and folds of packets rather than the contents, which is where the webbing shows first.

Anything with webbing goes out, in a bag, out of the apartment the same day rather than into the kitchen bin.

Cleaning the cupboard, where the detail matters

Larvae crawl away from the food to pupate, and they head for the edges. That is why cleaning the shelf surface achieves so little on its own.

Empty the cupboard completely. Vacuum the corners, the shelf edges, the underside of the shelf lips, the shelf pin holes, and the seam where the shelf meets the wall. Then wash with warm soapy water and dry. Check the ceiling of the cupboard and the inside of the door frame too, since cocoons attach there routinely.

The freezer trick

Anything you want to keep but are unsure about goes in the freezer for at least four days, which kills eggs and larvae. Take it out, let it come to room temperature, then transfer it into a sealed container.

It is also worth doing preventatively with new purchases of flour, rice, or nuts if you have just cleared an infestation. Four days in the freezer on the way in breaks the cycle before it starts.

Storing so it does not repeat

• Glass jars or hard plastic with a real seal, since moths chew through bags, cardboard, and thin plastic.
• Bulk purchases split down and frozen, rather than a five kilo bag sitting open on a shelf.
• Pet food in a sealed bin rather than in its original bag.
• Older items used before newer ones, so nothing sits at the back for two years.
• Pheromone traps as a monitor rather than a solution, since they catch males and tell you whether it is over.

How long it takes to be over

Expect to see a few adults for two or three weeks after clearing the source, because pupae already tucked into cracks continue to hatch. That is normal and it is not a sign the clean-out failed.

If moths are still appearing after a month, there is another package somewhere, usually pet food, a spice jar, or something in a different room entirely. Widen the search rather than repeating the cupboard.
