The Bin That Smells With A Fresh Bag In It

The bag catches most things and not everything, and what escapes ends up in three places nobody looks at.

Three places, and none of them are the bag

  • The base under the bag, where anything that leaked through a pinhole collects and never dries.
  • The rim the bag folds over, which is in contact with the outside of the bag and gets touched every time.
  • The underside of the lid, which condenses whatever the bin is off-gassing and drips it back down.
  • The pedal mechanism and the hinge, on bins that have one.
  • The floor under the bin, if it lives in a cabinet.

The lid underside is the one that surprises people. It is directly above the smell and it is the last surface anyone thinks to wipe.

Washing it in an apartment

Without a garden or a hose this feels harder than it is. In the shower is the practical answer for a large bin: hot water, dish soap, a long-handled brush, rinse, then stand it upside down on a towel to drain and dry completely.

A smaller bin fits in the bathtub or the sink. Whichever route, dry it fully before the next bag goes in, because a damp base is where the next cycle starts. Wipe the shower or bath afterwards, which takes a minute and avoids trading one problem for another.

For the smell that survives washing

  • Baking soda left in the dry base overnight, then tipped out before the new bag.
  • A short soak with diluted white vinegar for a plastic bin that has held smell for a long time.
  • Sunlight on a balcony for a few hours if you have one, which does more than it sounds like.
  • Replacing the bin, if it is old and scratched. Scratched plastic holds smell in a way that cleaning does not reach.

The habits that matter more than the washing

  • Drain anything wet before it goes in, since liquid is what leaks and what smells.
  • Wrap fish, meat, and anything strong before binning, or keep it in the freezer until bin day.
  • Take the bag out when it is full rather than compressing it, because compressing is what splits bags.
  • Double bag in summer, or use a bag rated for the bin size instead of one that stretches thin.
  • Rinse recycling, particularly anything sweet, which is what attracts insects to the second bin.
  • Keep a sprinkle of baking soda in the base under the bag between washes.

Where the bin lives

A bin inside a cabinet is out of sight and in a warm, unventilated box, which speeds everything up. If that is the setup, the cabinet itself needs wiping as often as the bin does, and the door being closed all day is part of the problem rather than a solution.

A bin next to a radiator or in direct sun does the same thing for the same reason. Moving it a metre is sometimes a bigger improvement than any cleaning.

When the smell is not the bin

If the bin has been washed, dried, and moved and the kitchen still smells, the usual next suspects are the drain, the garbage disposal splash guard, and the dishwasher filter. All three are enclosed, wet, and rarely touched.

It is worth checking those before buying anything, because a new bin in a kitchen with a dirty disposal solves nothing and costs money.

The guide to drain smells and the disposal guide cover those, and appliance interiors sit inside deep apartment cleaning.

Before you book

Good answers before a cleaner shows up.

Why does my bin smell with a new bag in it?+

Because the smell is from the bin rather than the bag: the base under the bag, the rim it folds over, and the underside of the lid. Bags leak small amounts that never dry.

How do I wash a kitchen bin in an apartment?+

In the shower for a large bin, or the bath or sink for a smaller one: hot water, dish soap, a long-handled brush, then upside down on a towel until completely dry.

How often should a bin be washed?+

Every few weeks, and sooner if anything leaked. Re-bagging alone leaves the residue that causes the smell in place.

What if the kitchen still smells after cleaning the bin?+

Check the drain, the garbage disposal splash guard, and the dishwasher filter. All three are enclosed, wet, and rarely cleaned, and any of them will outlast a new bin.
