Check the utilities before you leave the house

Utility accounts often end on the day the tenancy does, and people schedule that without thinking about the cleaning that comes after. Arriving to find no hot water, or no power for a vacuum, turns a planned afternoon into a wasted drive.

Call or check the account before you go. If the supply is already off, the honest options are to arrange a short extension, bring water and work cold, or accept that some of the job cannot be done and say so in writing rather than being surprised at the walkthrough.

Pack the trip like a job, not like a chore

• Vacuum, and check the apartment has a working socket for it.
• Bucket, cloths, sponges, scrub pad, and a squeegee if there is glass.

One trip, in the right order

The temptation is to do a bit, go home, and come back. Each return trip costs the drive twice and the setup again, and the job never feels finished.

The keys problem

Same for the deadline. If the lease ended and the building is preparing the unit, your window may be shorter than you assume. Confirm the date you have and put the confirmation in writing.
