The Week Before You Hand Over The Keys: A Move-Out Timeline

The principle: clean what is already empty

The mistake that costs a whole day is cleaning a room and then carrying boxes through it. Every surface you clean before the furniture leaves gets dirty again, and the last morning turns into a panic.

So the order is not by room, it is by what is empty. Anything you have already packed out of can be cleaned and closed off. Anything still in use waits.

Seven to five days out

• Read the lease or move-out instructions and note anything specific: carpet cleaning, a required receipt, a professional cleaning clause.
• Book the cleaner now if you are hiring one, because move-out weekends fill first.
• Empty and wipe storage: closet shelves, the coat closet, the storage locker, the balcony.
• Clean the windows, sills, tracks, and blinds, which do not get dirty again from packing.
• Photograph every room while it is still furnished.

Four to three days out

• Defrost the freezer if it needs it, which takes longer than anyone plans for.
• Clean inside the oven, and start it early because the products need dwell time and possibly a second pass.
• Wash the range hood filter and degrease the wall and cabinets above the stove.
• Clear out and wipe the cabinets you have finished packing.
• Take down curtains and wash them if they are yours to wash.

Two days to the last night

• Fridge emptied, defrosted if needed, and cleaned inside including the drawers and the seal.

• Trash and recycling out, plus anything left in the storage area.
• Hooks, adhesive strips, and tape removed carefully.

The day everything leaves

Once the last box is out, the sequence is top down: dust and wipe walls, door frames, and switch plates, then bathroom in full, then kitchen surfaces, then baseboards, then floors last so everything you knocked down gets picked up.

This is also the point to check the places that only become visible in an empty apartment: behind the door, under where the bed stood, the corners of closet floors, and the wall behind the fridge if it was moved.

The final morning

Keep it to a walkthrough, photos, and keys. Photograph every room empty and clean, plus inside the oven and fridge, the bathroom fixtures, the floors, and any mark you decided not to fix. Video works well because it is harder to argue with a continuous shot.
