A Slow Bathroom Drain: Get The Hair Out Before Anything Else

The blockage is almost always within reach of your hand, and the tool that gets it costs about the same as a coffee.

It is closer to the surface than you think

People picture a blockage somewhere deep in the plumbing and reach for something that will dissolve it. In a bathroom the reality is usually a mat of hair and soap scum wrapped around the stopper mechanism, ten centimetres down.

That is good news, because it means the fix is mechanical, quick, and free after the first small purchase. It also means anything poured down the drain is travelling past the actual problem.

Getting the stopper out

  • Lift-and-turn: lift it, hold the base, and unscrew the top counterclockwise.
  • Push-button or click type: unscrew the cap, then the whole stopper usually lifts out.
  • Pop-up sink stopper on a rod: reach under the sink, unclip or unscrew the pivot rod behind the trap, then lift the stopper straight out.
  • Shower strainers are usually two screws, or they simply lift with a flathead screwdriver at the edge.
  • Take a photo before dismantling anything, which makes reassembly obvious rather than a puzzle.

The pivot rod on a sink is the one people avoid. It is one clip or one nut, it takes a minute, and it is the only way to reach what is actually blocking the drain.

Getting the rest out

A thin plastic barbed drain tool costs very little and does the job better than anything else. Push it in, twist, pull slowly, and repeat until it comes back clean. Do this over the bin with paper towel to hand, because what comes out is genuinely unpleasant.

A straightened wire coat hanger with a small hook bent into the end works as a substitute. Afterwards, flush with hot but not boiling water, since boiling water can damage plastic traps and seals.

Why not chemical drain cleaner

  • It is formulated for grease and organic sludge, not for a compacted mat of hair.
  • It sits against pipes and seals, which in an older building is a real risk.
  • If it does not work, the plumber who comes next is reaching into a pipe full of caustic liquid.
  • In a rental it can turn a repair the building owes into a charge against you.
  • It does nothing about the stopper, where the blockage actually is.

Keeping it clear

A hair catcher over the shower drain is the entire prevention strategy, and emptying it takes seconds. For a sink, pulling the stopper and wiping it once a month prevents the slow build that turns into a blockage.

Rinsing the shower with hot water for thirty seconds after use also helps, because it moves soap residue along before it has anything to bind to.

When it is not your drain

One slow drain is yours. Several slow drains at once, water backing up into the bath when the sink empties, gurgling from another fixture, or a drain that runs slowly again within days of being cleared are all signs the problem is further down the line.

That is the building's, and it is worth reporting in those words: not the drain is slow, but several fixtures are draining slowly and one gurgles when another runs. That description gets a plumber, and the general one gets a bottle of drain cleaner.

If the drain is clear and the smell remains, that is a separate problem covered in the guide to drain smells, and the cabinet the pipes run through is worth checking at the same time, which the under-sink guide covers.

Before you book

Good answers before a cleaner shows up.

How do I clear hair from a bathroom drain?+

Pull the stopper out, remove the hair wrapped around it, then use a thin barbed drain tool for what is left. The blockage is usually within about ten centimetres of the surface.

Should I use drain cleaner for a hair clog?+

No. It is made for grease and sludge rather than compacted hair, it sits against pipes and seals, and in a rental it can turn a landlord repair into a charge against you.

How do I remove a pop-up sink stopper?+

Reach under the sink, unclip or unscrew the pivot rod behind the trap, then lift the stopper straight out. Photograph it first so reassembly is obvious.

When is a slow drain the building's problem?+

When several fixtures are slow at once, water backs up between them, another fixture gurgles, or it slows again within days of being cleared. Report it in those words rather than as one slow drain.
