Defrosting And Cleaning The Fridge Before You Hand Over The Keys

It runs on its own clock

Every other move-out task finishes when you stop working on it. This one does not. A freezer with a centimetre of ice needs six to twelve hours to clear on its own, and the amount of that time you can shorten is limited.

That is why it belongs two days before handover rather than on the final morning. The most common version of this going wrong is someone unplugging the fridge at nine in the morning with a truck arriving at noon.

Setting it up

• Empty both compartments completely, including the door shelves and anything frozen to the back wall.
• Unplug it, or switch it off at the socket if it is accessible.
• Lay old towels along the base and out onto the floor in front, because the water comes forward rather than staying in the tray.
• Pull out the shelves and drawers and wash them in the sink separately, which lets them dry while the ice melts.
• Leave both doors open and let it work.
• Check the towels after an hour, since the first hour produces the most water.

Do not chip at the ice with a knife or a screwdriver. Puncturing the lining is real damage on a rental appliance and it is an expensive way to save an hour.

Speeding it up safely

A bowl of hot water on a folded towel inside the freezer, replaced a couple of times, is the safe accelerator. It roughly halves the time, and a fan pointed into the open compartment helps too.

Skip the hair dryer. Warm air near a wet appliance and a live cord is a bad combination, and pointed at one spot it can deform the plastic lining. There is no version of this task worth that risk.

Cleaning it once the ice is gone

• Warm water with a little baking soda rather than a strong cleaner, since anything with a smell will still be there when the next resident opens the door.
• The door gasket, opening out the folds, which is where the black line lives.
• The drip channel at the back of the fridge compartment and the drain hole in it, which blocks and causes a pool under the drawers.
• The drawers and shelves, dried before they go back in.
• The underside of the bottom drawer and the floor of the compartment beneath it.
• The outside, including the top, the handles, and the sides if the unit is between cabinets.

What an inspection actually looks at

The fridge and the oven are the two appliances checked first at almost every move-out, and the fridge gets opened before anything else in the kitchen. What gets noticed is smell, drawer condition, the seal, and whether there is anything sticky under the drawers.

A fridge that has been emptied but not cleaned reads worse than one that is a little worn but properly washed. Take photos of the interior once it is done, along with the rest of your move-out set, since this is one of the areas where a claim can appear weeks later.

The door question, and who to ask

Leaving the doors propped slightly open after cleaning prevents the closed-and-damp smell that builds in an empty unit. Some buildings ask for exactly that, and some want the fridge left running for the next resident.

Check the move-out instructions rather than deciding yourself, because the two are opposites. If nothing is stated, ask in writing, and keep the answer with your handover correspondence.
